When is a chip repairable?

Every windscreen chip is different and that’s why we always assess the damage before we make a recommendation.  Part of the reasons for this is that the location of the chip plays a big part in whether it can be repaired, or a replacement is needed.  Chips along the outer edges of windscreens are more likely to be replaced because they can damage the structure of the windscreen.

Likewise, any chips in the area called the Driver’s Primary Viewing Area or DPVA may also mean a replacement is needed if there’s any chance it can obscure the driver’s vision of the road.  This area is commonly said to be within the area of the windscreen wipers on the driver’s side only.

Chip or crack?

Once we have looked at where the damage is and if this makes it a candidate for repair, the other thing to look at is the type of damage that has been caused.  Most of us use chip or crack interchangeably but there is a difference.  In fact, there are six different types of windscreen damage!  Whatever the type of damage, we will assess it and see what the best course of action is.  We always repair where possible and only replace as a last resort.
